Introduction to Geology - Curriculum Overview

    Welcome to the Old Earth Ministries Online Geology Curriculum.  One of the great features of the internet is that volumes of information are at our fingertips.  This course is designed to make the internet your learning classroom for geological information.  And since most items on the internet are free, so is this curriculum.  I've included pictures, videos, animations, and many links to other websites for additional learning.  It also features online quizzes and tests, and an easy to follow lesson plan.

    Since my college degree is in geology, I wanted my children to learn the basics of geology.  As homeschooling parents, we could not locate a good Christian-based curriculum on geology.  Unfortunately, most of the Christian geology courses are written from a young earth viewpoint.   This course presents geology from the old earth perspective, respecting both science and the Bible.  It is designed as a 12 week course, which means it can be used as a one semester high school science requirement.

HOW IT WORKS

     No registration is necessary.  I simply request that you send a courtesy email to the administrator email account, informing me that you are using the curriculum.   

     Each lesson is designed to be a complete, web-based learning experience, with pictures, animations, and links for further learning. Each chapter ends with a short quiz, followed with a 20 question test. For quizzes and tests, no password is required, which allows the student to take the quiz or test on their own.

     The system is set up for retesting if necessary.  Parents, be advised that students have the capability to simply hit the browser's "back" button, and change the incorrect answer, and then hit Grade Test and get a better score.  If you like to have your student's tests corrected to 100%, then this is not an issue.  If you are concerned about this issue, then you will need to monitor your student during the test taking process.

     When the student opens a quiz or test page, they have three boxes to fill in. The first is for name, the second for email, and the third box for the ID number. The student will enter their name. The Email address box does not require an actual email address, as the option for emailing the test to the student's email address is disabled. Simply enter any single character from the keyboard (the test program will not accept a blank response). Since I recently configured the testing for open access, the third field for Student ID is no longer used.  Simply enter a single digit number in the field.   

     For the quizzes, the student will be given immediate results that show which questions they answered incorrectly. For the tests, they will only receive the score. To record the score for your records, print the page with the score.  You also have the option of entering an email address on the test results page.  If you enter an email address, and click “Mail Me,” you will receive the results that are displayed on the screen via email.  FYI, the system does record the last test score for the student.  If you ever need me to look up a test score that you have lost, you will want to ensure that they use their full name in the Name box on the test page, so that I can find the result.

     Because I want to keep this curriculum free of charge, I'm using a shareware CGI script called QuizTest. One of the drawbacks of this software is that the student can have another window open, such as the actual lesson, and they could refer to it during quizzes and tests. If you prefer open-book testing, then this is not a problem. If you do not use open-book testing, you will need to ensure that your children close off all other open browser windows.
