Kent Hovind claims that the Sahara Desert is expanding at such a rate that it can only be a few thousand years old. He claims this is evidence that the earth is young

He is correct...geologists know that the present Sahara is only a few thousand years old. After first forming several million years ago, it has gone through several cycles
Kent assumes the desert formed at the creation of the earth. Obviously, it is not billions of years old. No geologist claims this
The age of a feature on earth does not give the age of the earth as a whole...it only gives the age of that feature. For example, Burlingame Canyon in the state of Washington formed in 1926. Based on this canyon, and using the same logic that Hovind employs, I could argue that the earth is only 79 years old
