G71:  Niagara Falls erosion rate indicates a young earth

Edited by Greg Neyman

Argument:

The rate of erosion at Niagara Falls is four to five feet per year.  Given the distance it has traveled during its history, it could not be more than 10,000 years old, therefore the earth is not older than 10,000 years

Response:

  1. The age of Niagara Falls is estimated to be about 7,000 years.  This only gives the age of the Falls, and not the age of the earth

  2. Not only must the falls be created, but the rocks which the falls cuts through must be deposited.  Young earth estimates do not account for the deposition of the rocks

  3. If the falls started at the end of creation, then the soft sedimentary rocks would not have had time to harden, and in place of the falls we would have the Niagara Canyon
