William (Bill) Parker, Ph.D.

 

     William (Bill) Parker earned a BS in Biology and a BA in chemistry from the University of Arkansas at Little Rock in 1987, followed by a PhD in chemistry from the University of Nebraska at Lincoln in 1992. Bill's undergraduate and graduate research projects both included substantial training in biochemistry and immunology. Following post-doctoral training in X-ray crystallography and subsequently in transplant immunology, Bill joined the faculty at Duke University in the Department of Surgery in 1999. His scientific publications on the hygiene hypothesis and on the function of the human appendix have been widely covered by such news organizations as the BBC, CNN, NPR, and the Associated Press.

     Bill has more than 25 years of experience with ministry to children and "youth" in the local church, and has spoken at numerous children's events and leadership training seminars for children's workers. Bill has been privileged to mentor a number of individuals during their transition from boyhood to manhood, with his ministry focused on helping boys and young men establish a vibrant and dynamic relationship with Jesus Christ. Bill has served in leadership positions for more than 10 years with the North Carolina Royal Rangers program, a church-based program aimed at facilitating the transformation from boys to men of God. Most recently Bill has served as director of that program and has helped write a variety of instructional materials for people interested in training children to become men and women of God. These materials include a solution-focused book on the spiritual needs of children, with emphasis on the conflict between our culture and raising children to be Godly men and women.  He works closely in ministry with Susanne, his wife since 1989, a licensed professional counselor working with children, and co-author of their book on the spiritual needs of children.
