Coals of Fire: Melting Hearts in Ocean Springs

The Answers in Genesis Daily Feature on 9 January 2006 tells of the efforts of Answers in Genesis in meeting the needs of people in Ocean Springs, Mississippi.¹ Answers in Genesis was fortunate to have had the opportunity to minister to the people of Ocean Springs after Hurricane Katrina. Unfortunately, this ministry involved thousands of public school students, as AiG provided them with backpacks and school supplies what were lost in the hurricane.

I applaud the efforts to relieve suffering after Katrina. And I applaud Answers in Genesis for not stuffing promotional material in the materials they supplied to the children. However, the backpacks did contain a card identifying Answers in Genesis as the giver. While I think this was appropriate for AiG to identify who the materials came from, I pray that no damage will result from this effort. What do I mean by this?

I'm certain some of the children will eventually look up Answers in Genesis, and discover what they are about. Unfortunately, Answers in Genesis knows that if they can reach children with their message, they plant this seed in their mind (that the earth is young), and they can possibly indoctrinate them into the young earth viewpoint. Later on, when the children learn the truth, they will have to address this conflict. Those that are in the church may choose to leave the church (as many in the past have done). This is because they see the issue as an either/or issue. Either the earth is young, or the Bible is not true.

It need not be this way. You can believe in an old earth, and in the Bible.
