On 17 March 2006 Answers in Genesis author Mark Looy published a rebuttal to a TV show on the BBC that was scheduled to air that night.1 The show had to do with a family of Kurds who walk hunched over, using their hands and feet to move about.
Answers in Genesis reports on several different takes on this phenomenon. First, they take aim at this being interpreted as an evolutionary connection to our ape-like ancestors. This line of reasoning states that these people reverted to a prior instinctive behavior that was long ago abandoned by upright-walking humans. However, the genetic encoding for this behavior was still present, but dormant.
A second answer that Looy presents says that there is a genetic mutation involved, which Looy guesses may be related to in-breeding of close relatives. Since the show has not aired, Looy points out that this is speculation on his part (however, Looy's whole argument is based on this speculation). In describing this view, Looy says "More thoughtful scientists" hold this view. Let me interpret Looy's words for you..."Scientists that more closely support the young earth position." We're the first scientists not "thoughtful?" (Had they thought about it more, would they have reached a "young earth-friendly conclusion?")
It's not a matter of one group of scientists being more thoughtful than the other...both have possible answers to this behavior. One fits the young earth model better, thus these scientists are "more thoughtful." But then again, this is what I would expect from a young earth creation science advocate, so no need discussing the bias any further.
In his conclusion, Looy says these evolutionary scientists are "stooping low and grasping at straw(men)." Given that the show has not even aired, we cannot be certain what the scientists will say. Answers in Genesis does not normally resort to guesswork, but in this case, they felt it important enough to go out on a limb and take a chance on it. Looy says that this shows how weak the evolution worldview is. Contrary to what Looy claims, evolution is stronger than ever, and is in no danger of being cast aside as a theory.
Looy is preaching to the choir. The young earth choir will readily accept the words of Looy as gospel. However, the rest of the world (including old earth creationists who accept evolution) can see right through this empty rhetoric. It will be interesting to see if they follow this up with a full report after the show has aired.
