The 3 January 06 daily feature for the young earth creation science ministry Creation Moments discusses the squirrel and the maple tree.
The author tells about the methods behind the red squirrel in running frantically among maple trees. The maple in the trees was too watery, so the squirrel would bite the tree, and would let it sit until the sap running out was somewhat evaporated/absorbed by the bark, at which point the sugar content of the sap was sufficient to be of nutritional value for the squirrel.
The author ties this to humans, who "may" have learned how to tap maple trees by observing the squirrels. While this is a possibility, it has nothing to do with creation. How we discovered the uses of the maple tree have nothing to do with who created the trees, or when they were created.
As Christians we should thank God for creating the squirrel, and the maple tree. However, this claim is typical of Creation Moments claims. It is strictly a "God of the Gaps" type emotional argument (this is wonderful...God must have done it). Presenting such an argument in defense of creation is a pointless exercise in futility...it will strengthen those who already believe, but will do nothing to argue for your position with the atheist or old earth creationist.
