The 6 February 06 daily feature for the young earth creation science ministry Creation Moments discusses the artwork of supposedly stone-age humans.
The authors relate how they used artificial lighting (the made a fire in a cave!), they mixed a variety of colors (crushed berries of different colors, added other pigments...not rocket science), and used scaffolding (stood on a stool, rock, someone's back, etc). They make it sound so much more sophisticated than it really is. Of course, they are trying to prove their specific agenda, that these people were fully human.
I have no problem with this interpretation. The paintings date back to 25,000 BCE. This is a time period right after the extinction of the Neanderthal (29,000 BCE). The only humans around were anatomically modern. I propose elsewhere that Adam could date as far back as 28,000 BCE. The paintings could have been done within the time frame of the Bible. However, we cannot be dogmatic on this.
Another way to look at it is that it does not indicate what humans did these paintings. There is no problems if pre-Adam, soulless hominids did the painting. Although they showed intelligence with these paintings, intelligence is no sign that they had eternal souls. Therefore, old earth creationists, both progressive and theistic evolutionists, have no problems with these cave drawings.
As Christians we should thank God for the creative works of prior peoples. However, as is typical of Creation Moments claims, this argument boils down to an emotional one, or a "God of the Gaps" type argument. Presenting such an argument in defense of creation is a pointless exercise in futility...it will strengthen those who already believe, but will do nothing to argue for your position with the atheist or old earth creationist.
