Squirrels Give Age of Grand Canyon

     The 20 March 06 daily feature for the young earth creation science ministry Creation Moments discusses tassel-eared squirrel, and its implications for and against evolution.

     The author tells how this species of squirrel is located on both the north and south rims of the Canyon.  These communities of squirrels are supposedly isolated from each other, and have not interacted for millions of years.  Their only difference is in their fur color.  The author claims that since they have been apart for millions of years, evolution should have changed them.

     The Creation Moments author says "According to a law of evolution accepted by evolutionists, there should be a much larger difference between the north and south squirrels if the Grand Canyon is really millions of years old. The conclusion must be, then, that the Grand Canyon is quite young - only thousands of years old."   

     This is an oversimplification and misunderstanding of the theory of evolution.  Two points arise to prove this statement wrong.  First, an animal can reach a point of statis within its development, and not change any further.  Just because an animal does not change, does not prove evolution wrong.  The second point is...these animals only lived a few miles apart.  In essence, they were both exposed to the same environment.  Therefore, we would not expect to see any great differences between the two, because they were both exposed to the same factors.  A change in one would probably also occur in the other.

     As Christians we should thank God for the way He designed the various animals that we can enjoy.  However, this claim is typical of Creation Moments claims.  It is strictly a "God of the Gaps" type emotional argument (this is wonderful...God must have done it).  Presenting such an argument in defense of creation is a pointless exercise in futility...it will strengthen those who already believe, but will do nothing to argue for your position with the atheist or old earth creationist.
