The 28 March 06 daily feature for the young earth creation science ministry Creation Moments talks about the authors' encounters when he presents evidence for the creation.
The author that when he gives talks about creation to youth, they realize that evolution is untrue, and believe they have been lied to. They feel angry that they have been misled by their teachers.
Usually, the teaching of evolution in grades 1-12 is only at a superficial level. They are taught enough to understand the theory, but not enough to defend it against creationist attacks. Typically, arguments by creationists point out flaws, or places where there is gaps in the theory, with no explanation. However, despite these problems, the theory as a whole is still valid. If there were no problems with it, it would be fact, and not theory.
The author gives the story of one young man, who wished his older brother had heard this message. His brother had left the church. This is typical of life within a young earth creation science church. They present the creation/evolution debate as a choice...either you believe God (and a young earth) or you believe in evolution (and deny God). It does not have to be this way. You can accept the Bible as the inerrant Word of God, accept a literal translation of Genesis, and believe the earth is billions of years old (with or without evolution). There is no conflict between conservative Christianity and long ages.
Today, the exact opposite of this author's story is playing out everywhere in America. People who have been told that the earth is young are learning in college that it is old. They are angry with those who said it was young, in many cases, angry with their own parents. They leave the church. The young earth creation science movement is to blame...not evolution...not long ages. If they knew they could accept both, there would be no conflict. Unfortunately, over the last century, the church has lost millions of people through this process.
Both of these processes are tragedies. In the first story, the young earth author who gives these speeches is misleading our youth with bad science. Second, the opposite situation where the youth leave the church, as a result of his young earth upbringing, is also a tragedy. Both of these tragedies can easily be prevented by the application of correct science within the church. Old earth creationism provides the answer to both.
