The 30 March 06 daily feature for the young earth creation science ministry Creation Moments talks about the age of the earth..
The author criticizes geologists, who have changed their interpretation of the earth many times. For instance, the author says that in 1900, they thought the earth was between 400 and 500 million years old. And in 1850, they thought it was between 400,000 and 500,000 years old. Of course, we know know that the earth is about 4.5 billion years old.
The author neglects to tell people that the tools used to date the earth have improved through time, and new methods have been discovered. Prior to 1900, the only way that they had was simple estimation, in their minds, of how long they think the process took. Now, we have scientific data, and don't have to rely on guesswork.
The author also mentions the argument about the contents of the world's oceans. Based on the amount of aluminum in the ocean, the earth is only 100 years old!, and based on iron, it is only 140 years old! These dissolved mineral arguments originated with Henry Morris, in his book Scientific Creationism. However, he mistakenly used the residence times of the dissolved minerals, and not the actual accumulation times. This argument was shown to be false many years ago. For more, click here.
As a typical of young earth claims, poor science yields poor arguments.
