The 30 June 06 daily feature for the young earth creation science ministry Creation Moments claims that the sun is young, based on a lack of detection of the proper amount of neutrinos emitted by our sun.
The author examines initial evolutionary theory on how the sun works, and shows that it was discarded because it would mean the sun could not be billions of years old. He states it was discarded in favor of the sun producing its energy from nuclear forces. However, the author then points out that scientists only observe one-third to one-fourth of the neutrinos that should be emitted from the sun. Therefore, since these neutrinos are not there, the author implies that the secular scientists are wrong. He mentions that the theory of how the sun produces energy has changed once every year or two for the last 25 years.
While it is true that scientists don't know everything there is to know about the sun, that does not mean that the sun is young. This is the beauty of science...as new discoveries are made, theories are changed. The fact that the sun theories have supposedly changed over the last 25 years is a sign that scientists are actively pursuing an answer to the question.
The fact that neutrinos are indeed detected tell scientists that they are on the right track. The sun's energy is coming from nuclear processes. As our instrumentation gets better to detect the neutrinos, we will probably find the "missing neutrenos."
Christians also need to understand that science does not have all the answers. However, a lack of scientific answers for one theory does not constitute evidence for another theory. If young earth creationists have hard scientific facts to back up their theory that the sun is young, let them bring it forth for the world to examine.
