Catastrophe

     The 29 August 06 daily feature for the young earth creation science ministry Creation Moments discusses the strange weather of 1816, and its root cause, the eruption of Mt. Tombory the previous year.

     Of interest in this article is the claim that rock layers can be deposited quickly.  The author claims that while it might take 500 years to deposit six inches of sediment, a flood, volcanic eruption, or hurricane can create the same layer in only a few hours.  The author goes on to say that this throws off evolutionary dating.

     Fortunately, geologists know better.  It is not common practice for a geologist to date a geologic layer based on its thickness.  Radiometric dating is done to confirm the ages, and fossil correlations are performed.  But even more important than this is the consideration that geologists do believe in such rapid deposition of sediments...the geologic record is full of such rapid events.  However, most of the record shows slow and gradual deposition.  Geologists don't deny that rapid deposition takes place. 

     This is merely an argument taken out of context.  If one were to read the story of David defeating Goliath, then characterize the entire Bible based on this story, then one would have to assume that the Bible is a book about nothing but warfare...but we know that it is not.  The same is true of geology.  You cannot examine a rapid deposition event (six inches), and then assume that the entire geologic column (thousands of feet) was deposited rapidly.  You obviously would reach the wrong conclusions.

     When you want to learn about geology and earth history, listen to those who study it...not theologians who dabble in it and have no clue what they are talking about.  Although Creation Moments is a good ministry, they wander outside their area of expertise often.
