The 11 September 06 daily feature for the young earth creation science ministry Creation Moments discusses the presence of dust and debris around solar systems that are billions of years old.
According to the young earth author, hundreds of stars with debris surrounding them have been identified by astronomers. He goes on to explain that scientists believe that it takes only a few thousand years for a star to clear this debris. Therefore, there should be no old stars with dust encircling them, but many have been found. As the author points out, scientists believe that they are getting fresh dust from some unknown source, but they don't know where. She then goes on to explain that the best explanation is that these stars are only about 6,000 years old.
What she doesn't mention is that the article they are referencing gives two plausible explanations. Dust and debris form from collisions of two celestial bodies. They say that "Either another large body suddenly clobbered a planet or the migration of planets may have disturbed a previously quiescent band of debris." These are educated guesses of course...in reality, we cannot know for certain what the true origin of this dust is.
Just because a scientist does not have the answer, does not mean that an opposing theory is correct. We may not know how these old stars got their dust fields, but that does not mean that they are young. There is plenty of evidence which tells us the universe is very old. In this case, ignorance of one scientific process does not prove another ignorant scientific process.
