Academic Fraud...How about YEC Fraud?

Review Published 11 March 2014

Today's article on the Creation Ministries International website highlights a case of academic fraud (Another Case of Academic Fraud Highlights Cheating in the Sciences.)1  True, where there is money, in the form of grants, there will be occasional fudging of the data by some scientists.  However, this is not an "epidemic", as CMI hopes.  Just because there are several instances of data manipulation, does not mean that all of modern science, which supports an old earth, is falsified.

But what about young earth creationism and fraud?  Let's look at this topic.   Here is one of the statements by the author of this CMI article:

But scientists, like all human beings, have biases, agendas and belief systems that cause them to interpret facts in a certain way. It’s normal for people to want to also convince others of what they believe, and unfortunately they sometimes stretch the point in trying to get others on board.

This applies to young earth creationists as well.  They have a young earth bias, and are supporting a young earth agenda and belief system, which causes them to interpret facts in a certain way.  In fact, if they find some data that is contrary to their cause, many times they simply omit it from their articles.   Here are some examples:

In an article about a fossil turtle found 700 miles from the North Pole, YEC author Brian Thomas claims that the turtle, and other fossils found with it, lived in a tropical environment, and implies that old earth proponents have no solution for this.  His explanation is the Flood of Noah. He omits the fact that the Cretaceous Period was much warmer, and there were no polar ice caps.  Oops, old earth proponents do have a solution (but don't tell the YEC readers!)

When claiming that comets don't last long enough to prove an old earth, AiG astronomer Jason Lisle claims that according to old earth theory, comets come from the theorized Oort Cloud. This is only half true, as he omits data about comets from the Kuiper Belt.  In fact, the comet that he based his article on was a short-term comet, thought to come from the Kuiper Belt, so it had nothing to do with the Oort Cloud.

In an article from 2006, YEC geologist Andrew Snelling omitted key information about petrification of wood samples.

Isn't the omission of key scientific data, in an attempt to support your own bias and agenda, fraudulent?  These are only three examples of many that this website has examined.

Or, how about the young earth tactic of straightforward deception. Young earth claims about petrification and silification provide plenty of evidence.  Consider these claims about:

 Limestone deposition (CMI)

 Petrified Flour (Creation Magazine)

Claims that Make You Want to Choke (Creation Magazine)

Rock-Encrusted Pliers (Creation Magazine)

Radiometric dating is another topic that is often twisted by YEC's:

Hiding the Numbers to Defame Radiometric Dating

Chopping a Title Hides the Truth

Woodmorappe's Belittling Distortions of the Lu-Hf Method

Important Statements on Radiometric Dating in Woodmorappe's References that He Doesn't Want You to See

Of course, we must also include dinosaurs...

Rewriting the Last Dinosaur's Tombstone (Willful ignorance of data)

Conclusion

These YEC tactics remind me of Glenn Morton, a former YEC who became an old earth believer.  He proposed something called Morton's Demon.  When data that is contrary to a young earth comes into a YEC mind, the mind completely ignores it.  It appears YEC authors ignore plenty of scientific evidence, because it is contrary to their bias and agenda.

It appears that academia cannot hold a candle to the omissions, deceptions, and tall tales told by our young earth brethren in Christ.  Pray that God would open their minds to consider the evidence for an old earth.

Did you know that you can be a Christian, and believe that the earth is billions of years old?  You can even believe in evolution and be a Christian.  There is no conflict between science and the Bible...all one needs is a proper understanding how to merge science and the Bible.  To learn more about old earth creationism, see Old Earth Belief, or check out the article Can You Be A Christian and Believe in an Old Earth?

Feel free to check out more of this website.  Our goal is to provide rebuttals to the bad science behind young earth creationism, and honor God by properly presenting His creation.
