In a lengthy article on the Creation Science Evangelism website, author Jordan Niednagel (religious affiliation unknown) gives his exhaustive analysis of a creature that washed up on a beach in Santa Cruz, California, in 1925.1 Experts have dismissed this animal as a Baird's Beaked Whale. Hovind, in posting this on his site, is thinking that this may be proof of a plesiosaur.
There is absolutely no need to waste your time in reading this long article. The photographic evidence is enough to solve this one. At the time, several pictures were taken. Here is one picture of the beak of the animal.
Now, here is a picture of a plesiosaur (left) and a Baird's Beaked Whale.
Just one glance at these diagrams will show that the animal is obviously not a plesiosaur. The head of the plesiosaur does not contain the high forehead of the beached animal. It does closely resemble the Baird's Beaked Whale, however.
I'm not saying that it was a whale. However, it is clear that it is not a plesiosaur. Therefore, Hovind placing this on his website under the heading of Dinosaurs is indeed questionable.
Two more issues should be pointed out. First, a plesiosaur is not a dinosaur. Plesiosaurs are of the Superorder Sauropterygia, a class of marine reptiles, and dinosaurs are of the Superorder Dinosauria . The chart below diagrams the classification.
Subclass Ornithodira (dinosaurs and pterosaurs)
Superorder Dinosauria (dinosaurs)
Order Saurischia and Ornithischia (based on hip structure)
The second issue is one of "living fossils." If a plesiosaur were discovered alive, it would not mean that the earth is young. It would merely mean that they did not die off millions of years ago. Finding one alive has no bearing on the age of the earth. For more, see Plesiosaurs...What if?
Since this beach monster is clearly not a plesiosaur, I urge Hovind to remove this article from his website.
