This question was published in Dr. John's Q&A by John Morris in November 1999. The answer that Morris gives to this question apply to the Kansas School Board events of 1999. Because it is now 2006, and new events have occurred in Kansas, this answer by Morris is old news.
The new information comes from late 2005, when they again attacked evolution, by adopting new standards for science education which casts doubt upon evolution. However, the champion here is the intelligent design movement, not the young earth creationist movement. The new standards still require the teaching of evolution, but it declares that the concepts of evolution have been challenged in recent years by fossil evidence and molecular biology. In addition, the board rewrote the definition of science, so that it is not limited to "natural explanations."
While I hesitantly approve of these changes, it remains to be seen what the final outcome of this decision will be.

If you are not a Christian, and you have been holding out on making a decision for Christ because the Church always preached a message that was contrary to what you saw in the scientific world, then rest assured that the Bible is the inerrant Word of God, and you can believe in Christ and receive salvation, while still believing in an old earth.
