This question was published in Dr. John's Q&A by John Morris in February 1990. In this answer to the gap theory Morris gives a limited but adequate review of the gap theory, and makes an argument against it. Although we at Old Earth Ministries do not believe in the gap theory, if one wants to do so, they may. There are no valid theological reasons that would prevent one from believing in the gap theory. (since it appears that God does not care what you believe about the creation).
