Can Children Benefit From Creation Thinking?

This question was published in Dr. John's Q&A by John Morris in April 2001.  According to Morris, the answer is obviously yes.  He says "Ministry to young people can be found near the top of our list of priorities."  This is because he recognizes that children are gullible, and thus they should be indoctrinated as soon as they can understand the young earth viewpoint.  Morris also recognizes the most effective tool in reaching children...dinosaurs.

Morris then details a few more techniques in reaching children.  Noah's Ark, Mount Saint Helens, and biological information are a few of them.  He says it is fun to see how young people accept creation teaching.  That is because they are more likely to accept the words of an authority figure like Morris, without questioning the truthfulness of the information.  Adults, on the other hand, are better able to see through the false teachings of young earth creation science.  If Morris can reach them when they are young, they have a better chance of remaining young earth creationists during their lives.

However, I have shown that creation thinking need not be young earth only (for one of many examples, see the answer to Question 7).  You can be an evolutionist, and accept that God created through evolution.  You can believe in progressive creationism, and accept a literal, inerrant Word of God, and an old earth.  And, since this science agrees with the Bible, you won't have to waste your time trying to twist science to fit a young earth interpretation.

Morris notes that over 50 percent of freshman at universities believe in some form of creation, but as he correctly point out, this number decreases as they move toward graduation.  Morris would equate this to evolution.  I equate it the drop in belief in creation to young earth creationism.

Many youth are taught that creationism is true, and evolution is wrong, and you can't have it both ways.  When they get to college, they learn that the earth is not young.  They think back to their training...it is an either/or choice.  So they choose to leave the church.  It does not have to be this way.  You can believe in long ages and be a Christian.  You can believe in evolution and be a Christian (C. S. Lewis, the author of Narnia, was a theistic evolutionist).

Even with the dangers of young earth creationism, it does have a plus side.  I recognize that some are brought to the knowledge of Jesus Christ through young earth ministries.  I thank God for these saved souls.  However, they are being reached with a lie.  The sad thing is...those giving out these lies don't know they are lying...they honestly believe in a young earth.  How can they do this, in the face of such overwhelming evidence?  Insight into this process is provided by a former young earth creationist, Glenn Morton.  His article Morton's Demon explains how they ignore the evidence.

If you are not a Christian, and you have been holding out on making a decision for Christ because the Church always preached a message that was contrary to what you saw in the scientific world, then rest assured that the Bible is the inerrant Word of God, and you can believe in Christ and receive salvation, while still believing in an old earth.  Click here for more.

Are you a Christian who believes in young earth creationism?  Now that we have shown the many difficulties of the young earth creation science model in this and many other articles, how does this impact your Christian life?  If you are a young-earth creationism believer, click here.
