This question was published in Dr. John's Q&A by John Morris in January 2006. I agree with Morris that there was a great flood, but unlike him, I believe it was local. In order for him to believe in a global flood, Morris must add to the text of the Bible.
Morris says that "the winds incessantly howled." The text does not claim this. He says "the thunder continually pealed." The Bible makes no claims about thunder, nor the storm's intensity...it only says it rained. Morris says "Earthquakes shook the planet without stop, sending tsunamis in every direction." The Bible makes no mention of earthquakes and tsunamis. Then he claims there were underwater volcanoes. The Bible says nothing of volcanoes. It does mention the fountains of the great deep, but this is understood as water, not volcanic lava. Of the lava, he infers that it heated the water, "making life on board almost unbearable." The Bible says nothing of this heated water, nor of the unbearable daily life upon the ark.
Morris mentions that creationists are now interested in super hurricanes, or hypercanes, but this is merely conjecture on his part. Nobody has ever seen a hypercane. He goes on to say that Noah entered a post-flood world that was vastly different. "Plant and animal life had been devastated." Actually, in the young earth model, plant life would have been non-existent. There would be no olive branch for the raven to bring back. Wherever the raven flew, he would only see mud. However, with the old earth local flood scenario, the raven merely had to fly to a part of the land not affected by the flood, and return with the olive branch.
This mud-earth presents another problem for Noah. There would be no food for the animals to eat. Not only would the ark need to carry food for the duration of the time they were floating, but it would have to carry several more years supply of food for the animals.
When the animals were released, the carnivores, the lions, tigers, and other mammals, and the carnivorous dinosaurs, the t-rex, and the raptors, would be hungry. They had a ready supply of food, in the animals on the ark. In reality, in several months, Noah and his family would probably be T-Rex Chow, after all the other animals were eaten. Finally, after there was no food, the T-rex and the rest of the carnivores would eat each other, the last ones dying of starvation. The planet today, 4,300 years later, would be a lifeless ball of mud.
For the post-flood world, Morris says there most certainly was earthquakes (none of which are mentioned in the Bible). Storms would continue, and the post-flood ice age would dominate the land for 600 years...however, there is no mention in the Bible of this ice age, nor of vast storms. In fact, it appears that life picked up right where it left off prior to the flood, in the same living conditions as the pre-flood world. This fits perfectly in the old earth, local flood scenario, but is a wash in the young earth, global flood world.
I agree, however, that the rainbow is indeed a sign that God would never again flood the earth in judgment. This flood killed all but 8 people. No flood since Noah's Flood has killed off everyone on the planet, so God has kept his promise.
