This question was published in Dr. John's Q&A by John Morris in December 1991. Yes, it is, but is it the most effective?
Morris relates a story from a person who did time in prison. This person was reached through one of the products from Morris' ministry, the Institute for Creation Research. Morris entire answer consists of his testimony.
I do not doubt that young earth ministry has its fruits. However, in the long run, we are better off without young earth creationism. Young earth creation scientists are seen as the laughingstock of the scientific world. Their theories are full of problems, as can be seen in over 1,000 articles on this web site. And, since you can believe in an inerrant, infallible Word of God, and a literal translation of Genesis, and believe in long ages (with or without evolution), there is no reason to be dogmatic about young earth creation science.
Young earth creation science will continue to be successful, due to the fact that its followers are not allowed to consider any evidence to the contrary (see Morton's Demon). New converts to young earth creation science are insulated from old earth arguments (for instance, there are no links to old earth websites on the major young earth websites). People are urged to accept the teachings of creation science experts, without examining the information for themselves.
The negative attitude of young earth creationism toward opposing viewpoints, and the dogmatic teaching of it in churches, are not necessary. God does not care what form of creationism you believe in. It makes no difference to your salvation. But don't take my word for it (see Billy Graham).

If you are not a Christian, and you have been holding out on making a decision for Christ because the Church always preached a message that was contrary to what you saw in the scientific world, then rest assured that the Bible is the inerrant Word of God, and you can believe in Christ and receive salvation, while still believing in an old earth.
