This question was published in Dr. John's Q&A by John Morris in November 1992. SETI, or the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence, was a project that was funded by NASA in 1992, although the organization itself is older than this. Morris wrote this answer in 1992, thus we have the ability to look back, and say that the apparent 10 year search did not yield any results.
Morris claims that despite the failure that this SETI project will bring, textbooks will speak of intelligent life in the universe. It is not a question of whether or not they exist...its only a matter of when they will be discovered. He is partially right, although in 2006, I cannot see very much evidence of this claim.
When it comes to extraterrestrials, I will believe it when I see it. However, in the name of scientific research, I see nothing wrong with a little funding for such a project.

If you are not a Christian, and you have been holding out on making a decision for Christ because the Church always preached a message that was contrary to what you saw in the scientific world, then rest assured that the Bible is the inerrant Word of God, and you can believe in Christ and receive salvation, while still believing in an old earth.
