In a web article dated 13 May 2014, the Institute for Creation Research reported remarks made by Pat Robertson on his television program the 700 Club, on 13 May.1 The article, by Brian Thomas, is called Pat Robertson: Creationists 'Deaf, Dumb, and Blind.' No doubt, this type of statement from a prominent minister would rile most young earth creationists (YEC). However, one must look at what Robertson actually said, since the title of ICR's article is very misleading.
If you look at the title (Creationists 'Deaf, Dumb, and Blind), one would have to assume that Robertson is calling himself deaf, dumb, and blind...after all, Robertson is a minister, who believes God created the world. In reality, Robertson said "The truth is, you have to be deaf, dumb, and blind to think that this earth that we live in only has 6,000 years of existence." Robertson is clearly referring only to young earth creationists. Old earth creationists (who, despite the claims of young earth ministries, are also "biblical creationists"), are not considered by Robertson to be deaf, dumb, and blind.
In the opening paragraph, ICR makes the statement,
The eight staff doctorates at the Institute for Creation Research, and the many other biblical creation scientists who agree with their position, might like to know what they supposedly haven't heard, don't understand, and haven't seen.
There is no scientific evidence that ICR and its employees have not seen or heard of. The problem is one of understanding, and accepting of the evidence. Despite what the scientific evidence says, young earth ministries ignore it, and reshape it to fit their own preconceived idea of how old the earth is. You have heard it many times on this website...YEC is science backwards. Science collects data, examines it, and then reaches a conclusion. On the other hand, YEC has already concluded that the earth is young, and then they look at the scientific data, and twist it to fit their young earth conclusion. Reaching a scientific conclusion that the earth is young, before examining the data, is science in reverse...which really isn't science at all.
What do young earth creationists do when they have to face real scientific facts? They pass it through a young earth filter in their minds. Glenn Morton, a former YEC, and contributor to ICR publications, explains this process in the article Morton's Demon. YEC's are trained to refuse any evidence contrary to a young earth. Some would call this "brainwashed."
ICR goes on to refer to Robertson's comments:
Robertson referred to an age of dinosaurs including a Jurassic Period, "radiocarbon dating," and oil as three icons representing millions of years. Good science refutes each.
Unfortunately, YEC science is not even science at all, so it refutes nothing. These examples all indicate an ancient earth, although radiocarbon dating is limited, as it is only valid for objects up to about 60,000 years old...still much too old for a 6,000 year old YEC model. (In the article ICR refers to its limit as about 90,000 years old).
In the conclusion, ICR states,
Pat passionately pleaded with 700 Club viewers, "There's no WAY that all this that you have here took place in 6,000 years." Oh, yes there is. All you need is a Creator, a flood, and His Word to know that. Good thing that good science confirms it, though.
Pat is right. God created the universe, and our world, over a period of 13.7 billion years. To borrow from ICR's words above, all you need for this is a Creator, His creation to study (i.e. the earth, or Flood deposits, as alluded to by ICR), and His Word (with a proper understanding of it, it supports an old earth). Good science confirms an old earth. Praise God for His wonderful creation, and for Pat Robertson recognizing that God created over billions of years.

If you are not a Christian, and you have been holding out on making a decision for Christ because the Church always preached a message that was contrary to what you saw in the scientific world, then rest assured that the Bible is the inerrant Word of God, and you can believe in Christ and receive salvation, while still believing in an old earth.
