An interesting article by Carl Wieland on the young earth creation science website Answers in Genesis proclaims that "Fossil Pollen in Grand Canyon Overturns Plant Evolution."1 The authors go on to state, "Finding fossil pollen grains in rock classed as 'Precambrian' (long before seed plants are thought to have evolved) is as devastating to the whole evolutionary framework as finding a human bone in a Carboniferous coal seam."
They are absolutely correct, this would be a blow to those proposing evolution of plants...or would it?
First, let me state that I do not believe in evolution. However, the evidence for it is strong. There are old earth creationists who believe in evolution, and this is an acceptable form of belief. So, what implications does this article have for old-earth creationists, both theistic evolutionists and progressive creationists?
The answer is...none. It has nothing to do with the age of the earth. In fact, even the evolutionist will look at this and say, "Wow, I guess plants were around long before we first thought they were," and they will change their timelines to more accurately reflect this new data.
Does this disprove the old age of the earth...not a chance. We've already seen that you cannot create the strata of the Grand Canyon during the time of Noah's Flood, and you can't produce chalk in a Noah's Flood model, and all other evidences for a young earth are simply false. It simply means pollen was around sooner than we first thought.
The conclusion states, "This is contrary to expectations based on the accepted geologic column." If true, it is time to make an adjustment in the column. Nothing more can be implied. When creation science advocates make finds like this, they need to submit them to the trade journals in order to inform all scientists of the need to adjust their models. Have they done this? If not, go for it!
