In an article in Creation Magazine in December 1991, young earth author Russell Grigg explains, using the words of the Apostle John, how he used creation in his evangelism.1
Today nobody would doubt that John, the author of the Gospel of John, firmly believed that God created the world. One look at the verses Grigg uses, John 1:1-3, makes this clear. However, while John did attribute the creation of the world to God, he did not say how, nor did he say how long that creation lasted.
Grigg claims that false teaching, in the form of evolution, is invading our churches today, and he contrasts that with the first-century church, which the Apostle John helped form. Evolution, however, has to do with the "how" of creation, and the "how long" of creation. Those who believe in Theistic Evolution fully accept God as the creator...in other words, they fully agree with the statements made by the Apostle John!
It is abundantly clear from the Bible that one can believe in the Bible, and the creation account in Genesis, and believe that the earth is billions of years old. You can either accept evolution, or believe in fiat (from nothing) creation, which is the position of progressive creationists.
The Apostle John was concerned with recognizing God as the creator. He did so beautifully. However, the rest is left up to us, if we care to investigate it (you don't have to if you don't want to). The words of Billy Graham sum it up perfectly.
