The June 2005 issue of Creation gives the testimony of a young earth creationist, Albert Mills, and his journey from young earth creationism, to evolution, and back again. 1
Dr. Mills was raised in a conservative Christian home, and when he was in high school, he began to be influenced by the evolutionary teaching.  As a result, he “bought into the non-literal interpretation of Genesis.” This foray into theistic evolution caused him to not take parts of the Bible seriously.
The article goes on to say that his church and family had not equipped him to deal with evolution.  Eventually, he drifted away from the Bible.  He even got wrapped up in belief in UFOs.
Finally, he was brought back into young earth creationism through the materials in Creation magazine.

The “Rest of the Story”

It is easy to see why Dr. Mills drifted away from the faith.  It was not because of evolutionary teaching, but because of his conservative Christian upbringing.  Young earth creationists teach their children that the earth is young, and that evolution is not true.  If you don’t accept this, you cannot be a follower of Christ.  They present it as an “either/or” choice. Either you believe the Bible, or you believe evolution.
However, there is no conflict between evolution and the Bible.  One can be a conservative Christian and believe in evolution.  Had Dr. Mills been properly taught this in his upbringing, he would not have gone away from the Bible.
Unfortunately, this scenario is repeated many times each year, as children of young earth creationists abandon the Bible when they are faced with the cold, hard facts of science.  In a sense, young earth creationists are their own worst enemies.  This is not to say that evolution is true.  Personally, I do not believe in evolution (I am a progressive creationist).  However, there is no conflict between evolution and the Bible (when properly understood).  If a Christian chooses to believe in evolution, they are free to do so.
I am thankful that Dr. Mills came back to his faith.  It is better to be a young earth creationist, than to not be an active Christian at all.  His talents could, however, be put to fuller use for God if he were to truly examine the age of the earth, free of any young earth influence.

If you are not a Christian, and you have been holding out on making a decision for Christ because the Church always preached a message that was contrary to what you saw in the scientific world, then rest assured that the Bible is the inerrant Word of God, and you can believe in Christ and receive salvation, while still believing in an old earth.  Click here for more.
