Creation Science Rebuttals

     As a Christian who believes in an old earth, I fully agree with Walker that God owns the universe.  I am also certain that the readers of Creation will also agree.  Given the target audience reached by the magazine, it is clear that Walker is "preaching to the choir," since his audience already accepts this as fact. 

     There are several claims in the article that need addressing.  Walker states that "The Bible does not make a frivolous claim, but describes in detail what God did, when he did it, and the subsequent events of world history."  He goes on to state that we can check the Bible's claim against the evidence from God's creation.  True, but that is exactly why the church today is reeling from loss of members, and lack of respect from the world at large.  When people compare the Bible with science, they don't agree, so they leave the church.

     Over the past century, the most vocal claimants concerning the age of the earth within the church has been young earth creationists.  The church drills young earth creationism (indoctrinates, brain-washes) into the minds of its followers.  Then, they go off and learn science, and see an obvious conflict.  Science clearly states that the earth is billions of years old, and the evidence given by young earth creationism (YEC) to counter science is extremely weak.  Thus the now educated church member has a choice...either the Bible is right, or science is right, but not both. 

     So what does the young person do?  They leave the church.  Just a few weeks ago, my pastor talked about the growing movement of atheists, and how active they are in overturning belief in God.  Where did these atheists come from?  They are a direct result of the teaching of young earth creationism.  When people compare YEC with science, atheism is the result.

     Imagine, however, if youth had been taught that you can believe in an old earth and the Bible.  When they reach college, and learn science in-depth, there would be no conflict.  If you have a proper understanding of how to interpret the Genesis creation account within an old earth framework, they would not need to choose between science and the Bible.  And the beautiful part is...you can believe in an inerrant, infallible Word of God, and believe in an old earth.

Evidences

     Walker lists several points which he claims are evidence for God's ownership of the universe.  The first point is biological, that life only comes from life.  I agree, but so can old earth progressive creationists, and even theistic evolutionists.  Second, paleontology matches in that fossils fall into "separate kinds," and there are no transitional fossils.  Yes, fossils are in kind...that is why biologists classify animals in Phylum, Genera, Species, etc.  Transitional fossil candidates are plentiful...however, young earth creationism does not accept any of them.  They have no choice but to deny them (Click for more).   Third, Walker claims that the geologic evidence indicates a global flood.  However, geologist outside of religious influences would never come to this conclusion.  In fact, the evidence clearly condemns the global flood model.  Fourth, anthropology indicates all people belong to one race, the human race.  In this point, I agree. 

     Walker's theory of looking at the Bible, and the creation, to verify God's ownership, would only work within the old earth framework.  Earlier in the article, he mentions other creation beliefs, including one that says "a large snake made the land."  It would be easier to prove that a large snake made the earth, than it would be to prove that young earth creationism did it.

     It is time to stop the exodus of people from the church, by getting rid of the failed theory of young earth creationism.  The world already has enough atheists, so the church should stop creating them.
