The Glass House Mountains, located north of Brisbane, Australia, is the subject of a Creation Magazine article questioning the validity of a display sign (at right, click to enlarge) posted within Glass House Mountains National Park.1 (This article was also the featured article for the Creation Ministries International website on 4 March 2013).
First, a little background scientific information. The Glass House Mountains were formed from the cores of volcanoes as the Indo-Australian Plate moved over the East Australia hotspot. As the surrounding material eroded, these hard volcanic cores became visible, and today provide an interesting sight to visitors. These eleven mountains were formed about 25 to 27 million years ago. Even though the plate moved over the hotspot, the mountains are not in a line. Their positions are believed to be due to fracturing (faults).
The Claim
Tas Walker makes the following claims about the sign in the article:
That they were eroded by wind and water over 25 million years was never observed.
But it ignores recorded history. The true history of the Bible describes a global Flood in Noah's day, so the sign should read:
“The Glass House Mountains were once lava plugs within volcanic cones. These erupted about half-way through Noah’s Flood about 4,500 years ago. The volcanic cones and surrounding Landsborough sandstone were eroded by the floodwaters as they receded into the ocean, revealing the lava plugs which you can see today. Relatively little erosion has happened since then.”
The Truth
Tas, you are forgetting several key facts. True, the erosion of the land was never observed. However, in your assumption that it was done by Noah's Flood, I must point out that the erosion that you are proposing (by Noah's Flood) was also not observed. As Christians, we all believe in Noah's Flood, but in the YEC version, they insert all of earth's geologic history into the flood. But what does the Bible say about the Flood? Here's the condensed, line by line version:
The fountains of the deep were opened, and it rained
the waters rose
the waters prevailed upon the earth
life died
the fountains and rain stopped
the waters fell
That's all there is! The Bible mentions no mountain forming, no runaway subduction, no erosion, no laying down of vast amounts of sediment...all of this geologic information is not in the Bible, yet YEC's claim it's all caused by the Flood. YEC's like "eyewitness accounts" but there was no eyewitness accounts to any geologic information during the flood, because Noah didn't record any.
Mr. Walker, you state the Glass Mountain volcanoes erupted about half-way through the Flood...how do you know that, since Noah did not record the formation of the volcanoes in the Bible? Sounds like you are just making this stuff up.
Second, it DOES NOT ignore recorded history like you claim. The geologic record is also a record of history, which when examined, reveals the natural history of the mountains, and it shows that the mountains were formed 25-27 million years ago, and then the surrounding rock material eroded away over the last 25 million years. In reality, geologists are looking at the recorded history of these mountains, whereas Mr. Walker is inventing history to fit his young earth theory.
