In an article on the Creation, Dinosaurs
and the Flood website, young earth creation science advocate Charlie Liebert
argues that the eruption for Mount Saint Helens provides evidence for a
young earth.1
Liebert (not a geologist) mentions in this article that
hundreds of feet of sediment were deposited in a matter of days, which shows
that you don't need long ages of geologic time. I agree, that a volcanic
eruption can cause the deposition of this sediment in a lahar flow. However,
well over 99 percent of the earth's sedimentary rocks are not volcanic in
origin. While it is entirely possible to deposit rock layers quickly in a
volcanic event, this does not prove anything concerning the remaining 99+
percent that are non-volcanic related.
Liebert also mentions the canyon that was eroded in less than
two days. What canyon is he talking about? If its the canyon that was eroded
some by the lahar, it already existed! It just underwent additional erosion.
He also mentions the fossil forests that are being formed in Spirit Lake,
and refers to Specimen Ridge in Yellowstone. However, the trees in
Yellowstone provide no comfort for young earth creation science.

Liebert appears to have thrown together these claims in
a quick manner. Some of his monthly items are lengthy articles...others he
just cobbles together to meet his own deadline. This appears to be one of
those quick jobs.

If you are not a Christian, and you have been holding out on making a decision for Christ because the Church always preached a message that was contrary to what you saw in the scientific world, then rest assured that the Bible is the inerrant Word of God, and you can believe in Christ and receive salvation, while still believing in an old earth. Are you a Christian who believes in young earth creationism? Now that we have shown the many difficulties of the young earth creation science model in this and many other articles, how does this impact your Christian life? If you are a young earth creationism believer, click here.
