In an article on the Creation, Dinosaurs and the Flood website, young earth creation science advocate Charlie Liebert argues that spontaneous generation is a problem for evolution.1
Interestingly, he puts this strictly evolution article in his "Geology" section, instead of his "Biology" section (does he know the difference between geology and biology?).
Spontaneous Generation basically addresses the first life form, and how it formed from nothing...how did a life form arise out of non-life. It is a problem for evolution...but not for Theistic Evolutionists, who believe that God started, and then in some aspects guided, the process of evolution. Therefore, it is entirely possible to accept evolution, and believe in an inerrant Bible, and a literal translation of Genesis.
While it is true that evolution has a problem, scientists are quite busy working on this problem of spontaneous generation.

If you are not a Christian, and you have been holding out on making a decision for Christ because the Church always preached a message that was contrary to what you saw in the scientific world, then rest assured that the Bible is the inerrant Word of God, and you can believe in Christ and receive salvation, while still believing in an old earth.
