In an article on the Creation, Dinosaurs
and the Flood website, young earth creation science advocate Charlie Liebert
explains a scenario concerning how to witness to a person who believes
evolution.1
Most of the article does not need comment, but it contains
one nugget of truth I would like to highlight. Liebert makes the
statement...
"Science changes constantly but God's word does not. You must take him to
his presuppositions."
This statement is misleading. It is very true that science
changes. As new discoveries are made, as new experiments are conducted,
theories change. This is the beauty of science.
Liebert says the Word of God does not change. I agree,
however this is too simplistic. While the Word of God does not change, our
interpretations of His Word can, and do change. Thus, where Liebert sees
creation days in Genesis as being 24 hours long, I see them as being
millions of years long. The Word is the same, it is our interpretations that
are different. Both of us believe in an inerrant, infallible Word of God,
and we both believe we are right.
Young earth creationists claim that old earth creationists
"compromise" the Word of God. We "change the meaning" of the Word. No, we
don't. We believe in the exact same Word as they do, interpreted
differently.
When science changes, we are free to interpret the Word of
God, based on these new scientific evidences. This is not changing the Word
of God...it is changing the interpretation of the Word of God.
Concerning "presuppositions," young earth creationists are
far more affected by these than old earth believers. A young earth believer
looks at the Word, decides that the earth is young, and then looks at the
scientific evidence. He decides what the evidence should say, even before
examining it. However, an old earth believer looks at the evidence first,
and then makes conclusions about its age. Who has the presupposition...the
young or old earth believer? Clearly, the young earth believer is
presupposing a young earth before turning to science.

If you are not a Christian, and you have been holding out on making a decision for Christ because the Church always preached a message that was contrary to what you saw in the scientific world, then rest assured that the Bible is the inerrant Word of God, and you can believe in Christ and receive salvation, while still believing in an old earth.
