Creation Science Rebuttals

    This question was published in Dr. John's Q&A by John Morris in May 1992.   Morris uses a little bit of restraint in answering this question.  He starts out with some key claims.  First, the doctrine of God is at stake.  This is not true.  What is at stake is the "young earth" interpretation of the Bible.  When it comes to the doctrine of God, I believe just as Morris believes.  The age of the earth does not affect the doctrine of God...just ask Billy Graham.

     Neither is the doctrine of Scripture affected as Morris claims.  Morris says the Scriptures are being distorted.  This is not true.  Old earth creationists use the exact same Scriptures, inerrant and infallible.  We merely "interpret" them differently...the Scriptures themselves are intact.

     Morris claims the doctrine of man is also affected.  He says "Can man, with a brain and reasoning powers distorted by the Curse, evaluating only a portion of the evidence, accurately reconstruct the history of the universe?"  I agree, interpreting the history of the universe is a daunting challenge.  However, Morris fails to realize one thing...he is also affected by the Curse!  How can he trust himself to do the same thing, and come to a young earth conclusion...one that he dogmatically insists is right!  By this reasoning, nobody should trust him either!

     Morris concludes by saying that he is hesitant to insist upon belief in a young earth as a prerequisite for church membership, but he insists on it for church leadership.  The young earth community is divided on this issue.  I'm certain that if you ask Kent Hovind this same question, he would say it is a requirement.  Most of the churches that he ministers in (independent, fundamental Baptist) have this requirement in place.

     What is the old earth creationist to make of this issue?  Stay away from churches that demand any type of creationist belief, both for membership and leadership.  Requirements for either are not Biblical.
