Morris begins the answer by saying that the big bang model certainly does not come from Scripture. I agree, however, one can see the big bang in Scripture. Morris goes on to say that we have not observed the big bang. True, but we have observed the effects of the big bang, and these effects continue to confirm the original model each time new discoveries are made.
To replace the big bang, Morris proposes the theory from Institute for Creation Research scientist Russell Humphreys. Humphreys wrote a book titled Starlight and Time, in which he proposed a mathematical model which is claimed to be better than the big bang mathematical model. However, I'll leave astronomy to the astronomers, and I won't provide a rebuttal. Dr. Hugh Ross, of Reasons to Believe, along with Samuel Conner, reviewed this book, and they provide a rebuttal.
Morris is correct when he says "The Bible does not give the details." It is up to scientists to propose models to fill in this gap. And, if you want to, you don't have to fill in the gap. It does not matter what you think about the big bang, or Humphreys model, or the age of the earth. As long as you have Jesus, you're OK. I think the words of Billy Graham sum this up the best.
If you are not a Christian, and you have been holding out on making a decision for Christ because the Church always preached a message that was contrary to what you saw in the scientific world, then rest assured that the Bible is the inerrant Word of God, and you can believe in Christ and receive salvation, while still believing in an old earth.
