TTMCLS - Things That Make Christians Look Stupid: Snake Legs

Review by Greg Neyman

One of the series of articles on Creation Science Evangelism website (the “Hovind” site) is creatively titled “Things that make evolutionists look stupid” (TTMELS for short).  The subtitle then goes on to introduce the topic for the article.  The article we shall consider in this commentary is "Snake Legs". 1

Snake Legs

At issue here is anal spurs, which are a pair of tiny claws found on each side of the vent of pythons, boas, and other primitive snakes.  Hinton argues that these claws are not well understood, but appear to be related to sexual function.

I agree...the literature shows that they are used by the male during copulation, however, Hinton is forgetting one key point...the female also has these claws2, and does not use them for sex.  Therefore, although the male uses it to obtain a better grip, this cannot be its main function.

What we have here is a deceptive argument.  Hinton only gives you information which supports his side of the story.  Once you hear the rest of the story, it becomes plain that these vestigial features were probably once legs.

How does Hinton characterize evolutionists in this article?  Here are some quotes:

  • If I were a member of the evolutionist cult I would avoid this example

  • Perhaps the mindless designer of the evolutionist cult failed to provide them with front legs

  • One might call that an oxymoron, but there are no oxymorons, only morons who posit contradictions.

This is a strange way to try and reach evolutionists with the gospel...by insulting them, calling them a cult, and morons.

Conclusion

Just like the other articles in this series, it calls evolutionists "stupid."  If we are to love the unsaved, and win them for Christ, calling them “stupid” is not the proper way to do it.  This will turn more away from the Gospel, and harden their hearts.  Driving them away from the Gospel is working against Christ.  Hinton appears to be working against Christ.
