One of the series of articles on Creation Science Evangelism website (the “Hovind” site) is creatively titled “Things that make evolutionists look stupid” (TTMELS for short). The subtitle then goes on to introduce the topic for the article. The article we shall consider in this commentary is "Spiders". 1
Spiders
Hinton presents no scientific data in support of his cause. Instead, he lists a long list of features from the spider world which appear to be intricately designed, and which could not (according to him) evolve on their own. Unfortunately, such arguments are emotion-based, not fact-based, and is what is known as "God of the gaps" arguments. For a discussion on what a God of the gaps argument is, check out this article.
We must be careful when arguing from this position. We are basically arguing that since there is no evidence in evolution, then God must be the answer...we are essentially arguing based on a lack of evidence. While I agree that many intricate designs in nature are indicative of a creator, the evolutionist is not so inclined, and will see our appeal to the divine as a weakness on our part.
With spiders, there are two possible approaches. For progressive creationists, who believe that God created each species unique, Hinton's arguments present no problems whatsoever. For theistic evolutionists, the answers to possible scenarios of spider evolution have not been worked out, nor is it important. Considering that God instituted the natural laws guiding evolution, and possibly helped out along the way, then complex organisms such as spiders present no obstacles.
How does Hinton characterize evolutionists in this article? Here are some quotes:
I also appreciate the many wonderful ways that spiders have of making evolutionists look stupid.
Much, or most, of her life was spent studying creatures that make evolutionists look stupid in more ways than she could have counted, but she chooses to remain stupid. What a sad and wasted life!
This is a strange way to try and reach evolutionists with the gospel...by insulting them, calling them stupid, and saying their life is a waste.
Conclusion
Just like the other articles in this series, it calls evolutionists "stupid." If we are to love the unsaved, and win them for Christ, calling them “stupid” is not the proper way to do it. This will turn more away from the Gospel, and harden their hearts. Driving them away from the Gospel is working against Christ. Hinton appears to be working against Christ.

If you are not a Christian, and you have been holding out on making a decision for Christ because the Church always preached a message that was contrary to what you saw in the scientific world, then rest assured that the Bible is the inerrant Word of God, and you can believe in Christ and receive salvation, while still believing in an old earth.
